Aurora Now
Privacy Policy
Effective 2026-08-26
VNIL AB built the Aurora Now app as a Freemium app. This SERVICE is provided by VNIL AB at no cost and is intended for use as is.
This page is used to inform visitors regarding our policies with the collection, use, and disclosure of Personal Information if anyone decided to use our Service.
If you choose to use our Service, then you agree to the collection and use of information in relation to this policy. The Personal Information that we collect is used for providing and improving the Service. We will not use or share your information with anyone except as described in this Privacy Policy.
The terms used in this Privacy Policy have the same meanings as in our Terms and Conditions, which are accessible at Aurora Now unless otherwise defined in this Privacy Policy.
Information Collection and Use
For a better experience, while using our Service, we may require you to provide us with certain personally identifiable information, including but not limited to approximate user location (100 meter radius). The information that we request will be retained by us and used as described in this privacy policy.

Photo uploads and public sharing
Information we collect
When you submit a photo, we process the photo itself; your chosen alias; the location label and approximate map coordinates; the capture or observation date; the upload source; and technical information needed to receive, review, and display the file. This may include image dimensions, file type, and metadata contained in the original image, such as camera and capture information. If your upload is connected to an Aurora Now account or Pro membership, we may also process the associated user identifier. For every upload, we process a random app-specific content-safety identifier and a record that you accepted the Photo Submission Terms. The identifier lets us prevent repeated misuse without requiring a public account. We include a one-way pseudonymous key derived from that identifier with published photo data so people can hide photos from the same uploader without receiving the underlying identifier.
How and why we use it
We use this information to receive and moderate submissions; operate community-photo, gallery, map, and map-history features; attribute photos; prevent misuse; respond to removal requests; and, if approved, publish the photo and submitted alias in Aurora Now, on VNIL AB websites including northernlightstonight.com, and on Aurora Now's official social-media channels.
We process this information to provide the photo-publication service you request and perform the Photo Submission Terms. We also rely on our legitimate interests in moderating submissions, securing the service, preventing abuse, and operating community aurora features. Where applicable law requires consent for a particular use, we will rely on that consent.
Automated moderation
Before publication, we send a resized copy of the submitted photo, the alias and location label, and limited camera or capture metadata to OpenAI for automated content moderation and aurora validation. OpenAI processes this information as our service provider. A photo is approved automatically only when the system reaches our required confidence level; uncertain submissions remain private until a person reviews them.
Public visibility and recipients
Approved photos, aliases, location labels, and dates are public and may be viewed worldwide. The pseudonymous uploader key described above is also available with published photo data solely to support uploader blocking. Other people may save or share public content. We also disclose submission data to infrastructure, storage, content-delivery, AI moderation, and social-media providers as needed to provide these features. A third-party social-media service processes published content under its own privacy policy.
Retention and removal
We retain submission information while it is needed to review, publish, secure, and operate the service, or until we determine it is no longer needed. We retain report records and blocked content-safety identifiers as needed to investigate and prevent misuse. You may request removal of your photo and its associated public details at any time by emailing apps@vnil.se. After a valid request, we will remove the content from services we control within a reasonable period, subject to limited backup, security, dispute, and legal-retention needs. Copies made by other people or platforms may remain outside our control.
Your data-protection rights
Depending on applicable law, you may ask for access to, correction, deletion, restriction, or portability of your personal data, or object to certain processing. Where processing is based on consent, you may withdraw that consent without affecting processing already carried out. Contact apps@vnil.se to exercise these rights. You may also lodge a complaint with the Swedish Authority for Privacy Protection (IMY) or your local data-protection authority.
The app does use third-party services that may collect information used to identify you.
